How labels are assigned

Each place is ranked within its geographic level (city, region, or country). The label reflects where it falls in the SNDI distribution:

Percentile Label
0–14.3% very well-connected
14.3–28.6% well-connected
28.6–42.9% relatively well-connected
42.9–57.1% moderately connected
57.1–71.4% relatively sprawly
71.4–85.7% sprawly
85.7–100% very sprawly

What is street network sprawl?

Street-network Sprawl is a way to measure urban sprawl, worldwide, through the connectedness of the streets. Less sprawl means more connected, more walkable streets. Well-connected streets – like New York City’s grid – are more walkable and can be served by public transit.

The street network is permanent, and its connectivity affects the livability and environmental footprint of cities for decades and centuries to come. In places with more connected streets, residents drive less and walk more. A well-connected street network is associated with better outcomes for health, the environment, sustainable consumption, social integration, and equity.

We can quantify how connected street networks are with the Street Network Disconnectedness Index (SNDi).

Why it matters

  • More connected streets encourage walking and cycling
  • Better support for public transit infrastructure
  • Reduced environmental impact from vehicle use
  • Improved health outcomes for residents
  • Greater social integration and equity
