Guriel in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Guriel plotted against Galguduud and Somalia. The SNDi of new construction in Guriel followed a zig-zag trend, compared to Galguduud which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase and Somalia which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase. Most recently, Guriel's incremental SNDi rose from 1.99 to 4.26 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Guriel ranked 3rd out of 3 cities in Galguduud and 36th out of 39 in Somalia as of 2020.

In new street additions, Guriel fluctuated in its street-construction patterns, while Huruta built increasingly disconnected streets over time and Sui fluctuated in its street-construction patterns. Looking at the full network, Huruta and Sui both became progressively more disconnected, while Guriel fluctuated in connectivity. Guriel and Huruta have been growing further apart in their street-network character since 1975.
