Baga in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Baga plotted against Borno and Nigeria. The SNDi of new construction in Baga was at its lowest in 1991-2005, compared to Borno which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase and Nigeria which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase. Most recently, Baga's incremental SNDi rose from 1.64 to 3.03 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Baga ranked 10th out of 16 cities in Borno and 70th out of 422 in Nigeria as of 2020.

In new street additions, Baga built increasingly connected streets from 1975 through 1991-2005, then shifted to more disconnected patterns, while Puranigudam fluctuated in its street-construction patterns and Rawalakot built increasingly connected streets from 1975 through 1976-1990, then shifted to more disconnected patterns. For the full network, Baga became more connected from 1975 through 1991-2005, then grew more sprawly from 1991-2005 onwards, while Puranigudam became progressively more connected and Rawalakot became more connected from 1975 through 1976-1990, then grew more sprawly from 1976-1990 onwards. Notably, Baga had a more connected network than Puranigudam in 1975 but the two have since reversed their relative ranking.
