Mahagama in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Mahagama plotted against Jharkhand and India. The SNDi of new construction in Mahagama peaked in 1976-1990, compared to Jharkhand which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase and India which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase. Most recently, Mahagama's incremental SNDi fell from 3.16 to 3.08 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Mahagama ranked 14th out of 46 cities in Jharkhand and 590th out of 1868 in India as of 2020.

In new street additions, Mahagama built increasingly disconnected streets from 1975 through 1976-1990, then improved, while Simla fluctuated in its street-construction patterns and San Rafael fluctuated in its street-construction patterns. For the full network, Mahagama grew more disconnected from 1975 through 1991-2005, then improved, while Simla fluctuated in connectivity and San Rafael fluctuated in connectivity. Mahagama and Simla have been growing further apart in their street-network character since 1975.
