Bhavnagar in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Bhavnagar plotted against Gujarat and India. The SNDi of new construction in Bhavnagar rose steadily, compared to Gujarat which rose steadily and India which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase. Most recently, Bhavnagar's incremental SNDi rose from 3.52 to 4.74 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Bhavnagar ranked 37th out of 92 cities in Gujarat and 638th out of 1868 in India as of 2020.

In new street additions, Bhavnagar and Changwon both built increasingly disconnected streets over time, while Irbid fluctuated in its street-construction patterns. For the full street network, though, all three cities follow the same trend. Bhavnagar and Changwon have been growing further apart in their street-network character since 1975.
