Gossaigaon in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Gossaigaon plotted against Assam and India. While Assam and India both followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase, Gossaigaon's new street additions followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase. Most recently, Gossaigaon's incremental SNDi rose from 1.91 to 2.83 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Gossaigaon ranked 6th out of 67 cities in Assam and 114th out of 1868 in India as of 2020.

In new street additions, Gossaigaon fluctuated in its street-construction patterns, while Le'an built increasingly disconnected streets from 1975 through 1976-1990, then improved and Panskura built increasingly connected streets from 1975 through 1976-1990, then shifted to more disconnected patterns. For the full network, Gossaigaon fluctuated in connectivity, while Le'an became progressively more disconnected and Panskura became more connected from 1975 through 1976-1990, then grew more sprawly from 1976-1990 onwards. Gossaigaon and Le'an have been growing further apart in their street-network character since 1975.
