Lautoka in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Lautoka plotted against Western and Fiji. The SNDi of new construction in Lautoka rose steadily, compared to Western which rose steadily and Fiji which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase. Most recently, Lautoka's incremental SNDi rose from 6.5 to 6.92 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Lautoka ranked 1st out of 1 cities in Western and 1st out of 2 in Fiji as of 2020.

In new street additions, Lautoka built increasingly disconnected streets over time, while Junagarh built increasingly connected streets over time and Thousand Oaks fluctuated in its street-construction patterns. For the full network, Lautoka and Thousand Oaks both became progressively more disconnected, while Junagarh became progressively more connected. Lautoka and Junagarh have been growing further apart in their street-network character since 1975.
