Gebre Guracha in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Gebre Guracha plotted against Oromia and Ethiopia. The SNDi of new construction in Gebre Guracha was at its lowest in 1976-1990, compared to Oromia which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase and Ethiopia which followed a zig-zag trend with an overall increase. Most recently, Gebre Guracha's incremental SNDi rose from 4.09 to 8.17 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Gebre Guracha ranked 69th out of 71 cities in Oromia and 173rd out of 181 in Ethiopia as of 2020.

In new street additions, Gebre Guracha built increasingly connected streets from 1975 through 1976-1990, then shifted to more disconnected patterns, while Hawsh Isa built increasingly disconnected streets from 1975 through 1976-1990, then improved and Payakumbuh built increasingly disconnected streets over time. For the full network, Gebre Guracha became more connected from 1975 through 1976-1990, then grew more sprawly from 1976-1990 onwards, while Hawsh Isa grew more disconnected from 1975 through 1976-1990, then improved and Payakumbuh became progressively more disconnected. Gebre Guracha and Hawsh Isa have been growing further apart in their street-network character since 1975.
