Xangongo in context: Street-network sprawl trends

The chart above shows SNDi trends for new street additions (left panel) and the entire network (right panel), with Xangongo plotted against Cunene and Angola. The SNDi of new construction in Xangongo was at its lowest in 1976-1990, compared to Cunene which peaked in 1991-2005 and Angola which rose steadily. Most recently, Xangongo's incremental SNDi rose from 1.25 to 1.4 between 1991-2005 and 2006-2020. In terms of the aggregate network, Xangongo ranked 1st out of 3 cities in Cunene and 1st out of 56 in Angola as of 2020.

In new street additions, Xangongo built increasingly connected streets from 1975 through 1976-1990, then shifted to more disconnected patterns, while Zhongxing Road fluctuated in its street-construction patterns and Tangla fluctuated in its street-construction patterns. For the full network, Xangongo became more connected from 1975 through 1976-1990, then grew more sprawly from 1976-1990 onwards, while Zhongxing Road fluctuated in connectivity and Tangla became progressively more connected. Xangongo and Zhongxing Road have been growing further apart in their street-network character since 1975.
